How Does Laser Hair Removal Work – and Will It Work for Me?
Laser hair removal works by sending light into the hair follicle, where it’s absorbed by pigment and converted to heat, safely damaging the follicle to slow or stop regrowth.
It works best on dark hair and light skin, as the laser can easily distinguish the pigment in the hair. But with advanced technology — like the Italian-made laser we use at Imera — we can also treat darker skin tones safely and effectively. In these cases, the laser targets the blood supply to the follicle, not just the pigment.
Light hair (like blonde, grey, or red) is harder to treat because it lacks enough pigment to absorb the laser energy. We’ll always assess your hair and skin type during a consultation to ensure the best plan for you.
Because hair grows in cycles, you’ll need multiple sessions — usually spaced 4 – 6 few weeks apart — to catch each follicle in its active growth phase. Once complete, you can enjoy smoother skin with long-term results and fewer maintenance treatments.

Pre + Post Treatment Care
During Treatment
During your laser hair removal session, you may experience a mild prickling or tingling sensation as the laser moves over the treatment area. Most clients describe the feeling as tolerable, and sessions are generally quick and efficient. A gentle warmth on the skin is completely normal.
After Treatment
Following treatment, it’s normal to experience some mild skin responses as your body heals. To ensure optimal results, always follow your technician’s aftercare instructions and avoid sun exposure, hot showers, and active skincare ingredients for a few days post-treatment.
Here’s a general timeline of what to expect:
- Within 24 hours: Mild redness (erythema) and slight swelling in the treated area.
- 1–2 days post-treatment: Redness may persist with mild itchiness and a tight or dry skin sensation.
- 2–3 days: Possible mild flaking and continued dryness as the skin begins to renew.
- 3–4 days: Skin may still feel slightly dry, but any irritation should begin to ease.
- 4–7 days: Full recovery with smoother, calmer skin.
2 Weeks Prior to Treatment
Refrain from waxing and avoid sun exposure on the treatment area for the two weeks leading up to your appointment.
If you have Fitzpatrick skin type IV or higher, it’s essential to use a tyrosinase inhibitor and SPF for at least two weeks beforehand to help prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
If this is your first visit, we require you to book a consultation with us clinic before your treatment. This will allow us to evaluate your skin, ensure the treatment is safe for you, and fully explain how to prepare.
24 Hours
Avoid the following heat-related activities:
- Steam rooms and saunas
- Swimming pools
- Intense exercise
Day 1-3
For proper skin healing and to maximise your treatment benefits, please use a gentle cleanser, hyaluronic acid, moisturiser, and SPF. Avoid active skincare ingredients during this time.
Day 3+
You can start using your recommended active serums again.
